Blood and gas samples were also collected before, during, and after exercise. This comprehensive data collection allowed researchers to evaluate various physiological parameters, including blood glucose, insulin, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), and respiratory exchange ratios (RER).

Study Results

The study found that post-exercise garlic extract supplementation significantly increased muscle glycogen levels compared to the placebo. However, there was no difference in GLUT4 protein expression between the two groups. This suggests that garlic extract enhances glycogen replenishment through mechanisms other than GLUT4 modulation.

Gene expression analysis showed that PGC1-α was upregulated after exercise in both the GA and placebo trials. However, genes related to mitochondrial biogenesis such as SIRT1, ERRα, and NFR1 did not show significant changes with garlic supplementation. TFAM and FIS1 were the exceptions, displaying increased expression post-exercise with GA supplementation.

Interestingly, garlic supplementation resulted in lower blood glucose levels post-exercise compared to the placebo. Despite this, there was no significant change in insulin response, indicating that garlic's effects on glycogen replenishment may not be directly related to insulin sensitivity.
