In recent times, the integration of unique performance-enhancing strategies has gained traction among athletes. Warm-up music has been acknowledged for its ability to improve mood and motivation among athletes. It is believed to create a positive emotional state, which could be beneficial for performance. Study Design

The study utilized a double-blinded, randomized, crossover design involving 16 elite female taekwondo athletes. Each athlete participated in simulated combat scenarios under one control and five experimental conditions. The experimental conditions included caffeine alone, placebo alone, caffeine with music, placebo with music, and music alone.

Participants ingested either caffeine (3 mg/kg) or a placebo in a double-blind manner. Following this, athletes completed an 8-minute warm-up with or without their self-selected music. The tempo of the music ranged from 124 to 168 beats per minute. The order of the test conditions was counterbalanced and randomized across participants to minimize order effects.

Psychophysiological variables measured included heart rate, perceived exertion, physical activity enjoyment, and felt arousal. The time-motion and technical-tactical aspects of combat were analyzed using video recordings. Heart rate monitors provided data on mean and peak heart rates during the simulated matches.

Study Results

The results indicated that the combination of caffeine and music (CAF + M) significantly enhanced the athletes' performance in comparison to other conditions. Specifically, CAF + M led to shorter skip and pause times and increased attack times. There was a notable increase in the number of single attacks, combined attacks, and counter-attacks compared to other conditions.

Additionally, the CAF + M condition resulted in lower mean and peak heart rate values. This suggested that the athletes could maintain higher intensity actions with improved recovery periods between efforts. Post-combat measures showed higher values of felt arousal, physical activity enjoyment, and positive feelings under the CAF + M condition, with a lower rating of perceived exertion compared to other conditions.

The findings highlight the potential of a combined music and caffeine strategy to improve both the physical and psychological aspects of performance. This combination appeared to increase combat intensity and enhance the athletes' overall psychological state during the fights.

Recommendation

Based on these findings, integrating warm-up music and low-dose caffeine could be beneficial for athletes using Thrivous supplements.
