These markers included tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRACP 5b) and N-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen (P1NP), representing bone resorption and formation, respectively. Adherence to the supplementation protocol was confirmed by counting remaining tablets and assessing changes in blood levels of vitamin B1.

To ensure robust results, participants continued with their usual dietary and lifestyle habits throughout the study. The data collected included both biochemical measurements and self-reported lifestyle factors like exercise and diet. This approach helped evaluate the supplementation effects while reducing variability from other potential influences on bone health.

Study Results

After a month of vitamin B1 supplementation, there were noticeable changes in the participants' biochemical markers for bone turnover. Specifically, the levels of TRACP 5b, a marker associated with bone resorption, showed a significant reduction. This suggests that vitamin B1 may play a role in slowing down the process by which bone is broken down and reabsorbed. However, the study didn't observe a corresponding change in P1NP levels, which indicate bone formation.

Additionally, the study monitored other markers associated with calcium metabolism. These included serum phosphorus, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and vitamin D concentrations. While the corrected serum calcium levels increased slightly, there were no significant changes in phosphorus and PTH levels. Interestingly, vitamin D levels showed a slight decrease, but this did not have a clear impact on the other bone markers.

The overall results hint at a potential role for vitamin B1 in influencing bone health by affecting bone resorption processes. The observed decrease in TRACP 5b levels might indicate that vitamin B1 helps maintain healthier bone structure by reducing breakdown rates. Although more extensive research is needed, these initial findings provide a promising starting point for understanding vitamin B1's effect on skeletal health.

Based on the findings of this pilot study, vitamin B1 supplementation could be considered as part of a strategy to maintain healthy bones, especially in adults. While the primary outcome was a reduction in bone resorption marker levels, it's important to combine thiamine supplementation with other healthy lifestyle practices. This includes a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, regular physical activity, and avoidance of harmful habits like smoking.

In practice, individuals looking to support their bone health might consider incorporating vitamin B1 as part of a daily multivitamin regimen.
