Are you looking for supplements that are proven to deliver cognitive enhancement? For many people, ensuring they retain mental sharpness and agility is crucial to a good quality of life. Appropriate supplements may make a noticeable difference to levels of concentration and focus, potentially improving performance on a one-off or daily basis.

Studies show that, if chosen carefully, supplements may not only enhance mental performance, they may also guard against the negative effects of aging. High-quality supplements that have been shown to enhance cognitive performance are known as nootropics.

Nootropics Offer Numerous Benefits

A supplement may contain a single nootropic substance, or consist of nootropic stacks. Stacks are two or more nootropic compounds in a single supplement.

In this article, we'll take an in-depth look at L Theanine. It's a popular nootropic that has been the subject of a considerable amount of research. And a new clinical study of its effects has recently been published.

I'll explain what L Theanine is. And I'll summarize some previous studies which have shown its benefits. I'll also discuss the new study, which shows that L Theanine may cause a noticeable improvement in some aspects of cognition. And I'll conclude with some information about premium L Theanine supplements that are currently on the market.

What is L Theanine?

The L Theanine nootropic is an amino acid that is most commonly found in Gyokuro and Matcha green tea varieties (Camellia Sinensis). It's also found in some mushrooms. Modern technology enables us to extract and isolate L Theanine for use in dietary supplements.

Background Research on L Theanine

A number of studies have shown L Theanine to have a positive effect on brain function. Specifically, it may help to maintain normal sleep patterns, alleviate stress and its effects, and improve a person's overall mood. Studies have also suggested that L Theanine may help to reduce the negative effects of aging on the brain.

Improving Memory and Attention

A 2011 study looked at the impact of green tea extract and L Theanine on memory and attention. After a single dose of L Theanine, an electroencephalogram found increased brain theta waves (an indicator of alertness) in the temporal, frontal, parietal, and occipital regions of the brain.

Reducing Stress

A 2016 study measured the impact of L Theanine in rats after weaning and water immersion stress. Corticosteroid (the stress hormone) levels in the rats that had received L Theanine were measured and shown to be lower than those in the rats that had received a placebo.

Stress also impaired object memory recognition in the rats that had not received L Theanine. The scientists completing the study concluded that L Theanine had modified corticosteroid secretion and this was responsible for the preventative impact seen.

Enhancing Learning Ability

Recent studies have also shown that L Theanine can improve memory. One study found that the ability of L Theanine to improve learning and working memory was largely due to its ability to regulate Glutamate (Glutamic acid). Glutamate (also known as ethyl l glutamine) is one of the main chemical compounds that control brain plasticity, learning, and memory.

Improving Mood

A 2011 study found that L Theanine may help to improve mood and cognitive functioning, following stressful events. For some people, L Theanine may assist in enabling them to move forward after a period of low mood or difficult circumstances.

New Study on L Theanine

A new study on L Theanine involved 69 Japanese men and women. They reported declining cognitive function. But they were otherwise considered healthy.

Of the 69 test subjects, 17 were excluded for not meeting the inclusion criteria. The requirements were an MMSE score of over 24, no other medical interventions, and the absence of food allergies.

Study Design

The study was double-blind and used a randomized placebo-controlled method. The intervention group received one capsule containing a 100.6 mg dose of L Theanine every day for 12 weeks. The control group received a corn starch capsule every day for 12 weeks.

Neither the study designers nor the participants were aware of whether they were receiving the intervention or the placebo. In addition, the subjects did not take any other supplements or medications that are known to have an impact on cognitive function over the duration of the study,

The impact of a single dose and a 12-week course of L Theanine were evaluated.

Single-Dose Results

Cognitrax testing showed that, after a single dose of L Theanine, reaction times improved. This indicates that a single dose of L Theanine is sufficient to improve attention.

The quality of working memory also improved after a single dose of L Theanine. Correct responses were significantly higher and omission errors were significantly lower in the group that had taken the L Theanine, compared to the placebo group.

Long-Term Results

When evaluated at 12 weeks, the effects of L Theanine seen after a single dose were enhanced. This suggests that there is a long-term benefit to taking L Theanine regularly.

Impact of the New Study

Previous studies have suggested that those who drink green tea on a regular basis have greater cognitive well-being than those who do not. For example, a previous study observed that a dose of 50.3 mg of L Theanine with caffeine could lead to an improvement in attention.

This latest study shows that L Theanine, acting on its own as a single nootropic substance, can benefit cognitive health. Although studies have demonstrated synergistic benefits from L Theanine and caffeine, the current study suggests that caffeine isn't required for some positive effects of L Theanine to occur.

Alpha-Wave Activity

Previous studies have shown that L Theanine increases the activity of alpha brain waves. Further, they've shown that the ingestion of 250 mg of L Theanine led to increased sustained attention in a visuospatial task. The study concluded that L Theanine may enhance the brain's alpha wave activity.

The current study supports the conclusions drawn by the previous study regarding the effect of L Theanine on attention. Scientists are now looking to further investigate this link, using neurophysical techniques to help determine how long-term ingestion of L Theanine affects nervous system activity.

It may be that L Theanine improves working memory through movement of the focus of attention and distribution of attention resources.

Separate Evaluation

It is difficult to evaluate the impact of L Theanine on working memory and attention separately because the two functions are interrelated. Scientists are hopeful that further high-quality studies into each of these functions will help to determine exactly how L Theanine is working in the brain to improve these functions.

Practical Implications

Together, the new study and previous studies show that L Theanine has a positive impact on brain function. Anecdotally, these improvements have been seen in drinkers of green tea. This suggests that the impact of L Theanine is not entirely dose-dependent. Even small doses on a regular or irregular basis may improve cognitive function.

The single-dose improvements seen with L Theanine are of particular interest to people who need to demonstrate peak mental performance on a single occasion. This would apply to students who are taking exams or people undergoing job testing. This is an exciting area for future research.

With so many proven benefits, it's clear that L Theanine may improve the lives of individuals who take a suitable supplement regularly.
