These Supplements Rapidly Reduce Pain After Exercise
Scientists have studied the efficacy of turmeric-boswellia supplements in reducing exercise-induced acute muscle and bone pain. The study is published in Medicine.
Muscle and bone pain is very common. Physical exercise has beneficial effects. But strenuous and eccentric exercise comes with a cost and injuries happen. It may lead to inflammation that causes pain in the body’s joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves, tendons, and structures that support the limbs, neck, and back.
Curcumin and boswellic acids are the active ingredients of Turmeric rhizomes and Boswellia serrata gum resin. They are known to inhibit some of the factors that are directly involved in inflammatory processes. Curcumin, a bright yellow chemical produced by the turmeric plant, is approved as a food additive by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Extracts of Boswellia serrata have been shown to enhance joint function and comfort.
This study was planned to understand the effect of a turmeric-boswellia formulation on exercise-induced moderate-to-severe acute musculoskeletal pain. Researchers also aimed to confirm earlier findings on a wider statistical sample.
The scientists evaluated the efficacy of a single dose of 1000 mg of turmeric-boswellia formulation in reducing exercise-induced acute musculoskeletal pain. And they analyzed pain relief and improvement in pain at resting position, with movement, and while applying pressure on the affected body part.
The scientists enrolled 232 healthy participants aged 18 to 65. Half were males and half females, with exercise-induced acute musculoskeletal pain. The participants enrolled had exercise-induced pain in lower back, shoulder, knee, lower body, and other parts of the body.
Half of the participants received a single-day, single-dose of turmeric-boswellia formulation. And the other half received a placebo.
The scientists found a significant and rapid pain reduction in the participants who received the treatment, compared to those who received the placebo. The analgesic (pain reduction) effect of the turmeric-boswellia formulation may be due to the presence of multiple natural anti-inflammatory ingredients, which act to improve acute neuroinflammation.
The scientists conclude that exercise-induced acute muscle and bone pain of moderate-to-severe intensity can be effectively relieved by a single dose of 1000 mg of turmeric-boswellia formulation in about 3 hours. This is, the scientists suggest, an effective and safe natural alternative for the management of acute pain.
