Ashwagandha, scientifically known as Withania somnifera, is a plant often used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. It has been renowned for its adaptogenic properties, which help the body manage stress. Recent studies have been exploring its potential benefits on cognitive function and mood, especially among healthy individuals. One such study is titled "Acute and Repeated Ashwagandha Supplementation Improves Markers of Cognitive Function and Mood."

The research aimed to evaluate the impact of ashwagandha supplements on various cognitive and mood parameters. Previous research highlighted ashwagandha's antioxidant properties and its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, suggesting potential nootropic effects. This study specifically targeted healthy young men and women to see if the supplement could boost their cognitive performance and improve mood markers.

This study is significant as it extends the potential applications of ashwagandha beyond stress management to cognitive enhancements in healthy individuals. Here, we summarize the study design, results, and recommendations based on the findings.

Study Design

This study was a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial conducted at a university clinical research facility. The participants were 59 healthy men and women aged 22.7 years on average. Subjects were divided into two groups: one receiving 225 mg of ashwagandha daily and the other receiving a placebo.

The trial was conducted in two phases. First, participants ingested the supplement and were tested for cognitive function after 60 minutes. Then, for 30 days, they continued daily supplementation and repeated the testing. Cognitive tasks included Word Recall, Choice Reaction Time, Picture Recognition, and many others. Mood states were also evaluated using the Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire.

The study measured several primary outcomes, including memory, attention, and executive functions, as well as secondary outcomes like mood state changes and health markers. Blood samples were taken to ensure the safety of the supplement.

Study Results

The results indicated significant improvements in cognitive functions among participants who consumed ashwagandha. Participants showed enhanced Word Recall, better Choice Reaction Time, and improved Picture Recognition. Improvements were also seen in the Stroop Color-Word test, where participants performed better in recognizing congruent and incongruent color words.

In terms of mood, ashwagandha supplements led to a notable reduction in tension and fatigue scores on the POMS questionnaire. This aligns with previous findings linking ashwagandha to reduced stress levels. No significant adverse effects were reported, indicating that ashwagandha is well-tolerated among healthy individuals.

Furthermore, blood tests revealed minor but favorable changes in health markers, affirming the safety of daily ashwagandha ingestion. These results collectively support ashwagandha's efficacy in enhancing cognitive functions and improving mood among healthy people.

Recommendation

Based on this study's findings, ashwagandha appears to be a promising supplement for enhancing cognitive function and mood in healthy individuals. Thrivous customers looking to boost their mental performance and mood may consider integrating ashwagandha into their wellness regimen. Given its adaptogenic properties, ashwagandha may help manage stress and enhance overall cognitive health.

It is important, however, to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, especially for those with underlying health conditions or those taking other medications. While the study has shown positive results, individual responses to supplements can vary.
